At the time of independence, Singapore inherited a series of issues from decolonization: racial riots, the undercurrent of ideological confrontations, a crumbling economy, the vague national identity, and the scarcity of basic natural resources... The notion that the involuntary independence of Singapore was conceived in chaos, is hardly an exaggeration.
As a response to the global design competition for Singapore Founders' Memorial, Zeng Zhibin has envisioned a heroic structure and space that echoes the nation’s transition from the state of chaos to the state of order.
The major programs and circulation have been arranged along an axis that is parallel to the Singapore Marina Bay east bank. Along the axis, space transits from chaos to order, the nature of architectural elements transit from sculptural to structural, the lighting condition transit from dim to gentle, the program transits from an autonomous public atrium to exhibition halls with designated purposes. making the design concept self-explanatory.
All the transitions are designed to echo the national memory of struggle through chaos to order, making the design concept self-explanatory.
